Firms should see sports as good business

February 17th, 2012

SINGAPORE – Companies such as SingTel, Standard Chartered Bank and OCBC Bank may have invested millions in marquee sports events in Singapore, but many in the sports industry here feel there is still too little support for sports from corporations.

This is why one of the recommendations of Vision 2030 is to convince more companies to adopt sports ventures.

Part of the strategy includes the formation of a competitive sports league for corporations – akin to the Business Houses leagues of yesteryear – and developing incentives and recognition for companies that support sports.

Singapore Sports Council chairman Richard Seow said yesterday...

Saturday

South Florida at Georgetown (ESPNU, 11 am ET): OK, lets see if South Florida is for real in the Big East. The Bulls are 6-3 and tied with Georgetown in the loss column. USF has wins at Villanova and DePaul, but that shouldnt compare to Georgetown this season. The Hoyas have their mojo back. Georgetown cant be ruled out to catch Syracuse with a game against the Orange next week.

Marquette at Notre Dame (1 ET): The Golden Eagles have to be applauded for playing well despite not having Chris Otule and Davante Gardner in the post. Gardner isnt expected to be ready for this game. The Irish have...

Norm Duke Prepares to Compete for His Third US Open Crown: A Fan’s View

February 17th, 2012

As an amateur bowler and someone who closely follows the professional circuit, I am looking forward to this years US Open more than any other tournament in 2012. Although not considered the most important title, the US Open provides the type of excitement and thrilling unpredictability that can only be found in an open tournament. In such a contest, one has the usual known quantities in the professional contenders who enter the competition. However, these known quantities are pitted not only against one another, but also against non-professional bowlers who dare to enter the fray.

The inclusion of so many wild-card elements makes for an unpredictable, exciting experience that...

Owners Say Proposed Sports Complex Will Not be Built Near Rogersville, MO

February 16th, 2012

The owner of Envision Sports Complex is speaking out on why she pulled the plans.

Christie Greene says that opposition from the community is one of the main reasons she withdrew the request.

Greene says the complex is all about the community and this was something she felt the Rogersville community didnt want.

This For Sale sign isnt going anywhere anytime soon.

There are always challenges that have to be addressed, says Rogersville Mayor Jack Cole.

Cole says the opposition to the location of the sports complex project was strong.

And Cole says neighbors opposed to it out voiced those who supported it.

We think its a good project, just...

In defense of E-Sports

February 16th, 2012

by Judson Rose

The Superbowl has come and gone again, leaving untold numbers of chicken wings slain, gallons of ranch ingested, copious bags of tortilla chips decimated, the volume of the Great Lakes in beer ingested and a belligerent horde of angry/jubilant fans doing violence to their toilets in the aftermath.

I didn’t follow football until very recently, and I have two factors to thank for bringing me into the fold: the slapstick absurdity of Tim Tebow and competitive gaming. I know this may seem shocking...

February 16th, 2012

LONDON, Jan 27, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) –
As UK retailers battle to grab market share from competitors and fill
the void created by expected further business failures, consumers should

channel. This was the view presented by specialist retail and consumer
goods consultancy Kurt Salmon at the launch of the Retail 2012* report,
produced by the leading retail trade journal Retail Week.

3 French games brought forward due to cold snap

February 15th, 2012

PARIS (AP) The French league says three first division matches scheduled for Saturday evening have been brought forward to an earlier kickoff because of freezing weather conditions.

The LFP said Friday that Dijon vs. Valenciennes, Nancy vs. Rennes and Saint-Etienne vs. Lorient will all go ahead, but will now be played at 15.00 local time (1400 GMT), rather than at the scheduled time of 19.00.

Inspections have been carried out at every first division ground, the league says, adding that it remains optimistic other games will go ahead over the weekend.

Referees can decide whether games go ahead as from two hours before kickoff.

Tech companies see gold in online payment handling

February 15th, 2012

A glint of gold in Indonesia’s e-commerce has spelled out opportunity for technoprenuers, beyond the usual throng of online retailers dispersed throughout online shops, forums and social networking sites.

Sensing the lack of a sound payment gateway to ease online shopping transactions, a growing group of tech heads are developing services that will enable people to send and receive payments online.

Indonesia’s largest online community forum, KasKus, introduced KasPay in 2009 in response to members dabbling in selling products including the latest smartphones.

KasPay works as an electronic wallet, or e-wallet. People must link their KasPay account to their bank...
