‘Maharashtrian leaders should bat for Belgaum’

December 28th, 2011

PUNE: Corporators of the recently dissolved Belgaum municipal corporation have urged Maharashtrian leaders of BJP to question the functioning of their government in Karnataka, which they say, is committing atrocities against Marathi-speaking people in the border villages.

The Belgaum corporators addressed a news conference in Pune on Monday to highlight the plight of Marathi-speaking people in the border areas, which includes Belgaum, Dharwad and Nipani. The Karnataka government recently superseded Belgaum Corporation for not performing its functions in accordance with the Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act 1976, and for certain actions that offended the sentiments of the people. The city mayor and deputy mayor had observed Karnataka foundation day on November 1 as black day. The civic body had also passed a resolution stating that it will not hold civic reception to honour the Jnanpith awardee Chandrasekhara Kambara, which had triggered protest in other parts of the state.

Campbell to backstop Team USA

December 28th, 2011

Former Spitfires goaltender Jack Campbell will once again backstop Team USA at the world junior hockey tournament.

Campbell, who helped the United States capture gold in 2010, will play in his third tournament for the Americans.

The Port Huron, Mich., native, who was traded to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, won bronze at last years tournament.

The other goaltenders are John Gibson of the Kitchener Rangers and Andy Iles of Cornell University.

Austin Watson, a former Spitfire, was also named to the 22-man roster.

Other players on the team include Emerson Etem of the Medicine Hat Tigers and college defencemen Derek Forbort and Jon Merrill.

Every year this decision seems to get harder, general manager Jim Johannson told usahockey.com.

The number of talented players from which we get to form a team says a lot about hockeys growth in the United States as a whole.

NEMISZ RECALLED

Former Spitfire Greg Nemisz was recalled by the Calgary Flames for the second time this month.

Nemisz, who was called up by the Flames for one game Dec. 10 against the Edmonton Oilers, has seven goals and 18 points with the Abbotsford Heat of the AHL.

Nemisz played six games with the Flames last season, recording one assist with a minus-one rating.

HENRIQUE BUSINESS

Ex-Spitfire Adam Henrique grew up working alongside his father on a family-owened tobacco farm in Burford, Ont.

While the Devils centre had a chance to follow in his fathers footsteps and take over the busiess, Henrique said his dream was always to make the National Hockey League.

I didnt want to be a farmer when I grew up, Henrique told cbc.ca. I think working there in the summer and seeing how hard he had to work to put food on the table, it showed me that I wanted to be here playing in the NHL for a long time.

SICH SIGNS

LaSalles Rob Sich had an assist in his debut with the Kalamazoo Wings Wednesday night in ECHL action.

Sich, a former Tecumseh Chief, signed a contract with the Wings after spending the past seven seasons in the Southern Pacific Hockey League.

The six-foot, 193-pound forward had six goals and 11 points in 13 games with the Mississippi RiverKings.

In other ECHL news, former Spitfires captain Harry Young was returned to the Wings after playing two games with the Albany Devils in the AHL.

SWITCHING SPORTS

Ex-Spitfire Jason Ward switched sports on the weekend.

The Brampton Battalion assistant coach suited up for the Brampton Inferno against the Oshawa Machine in the final game of a new Canadian Lacrosse League triple-header at the General Motors Centre in Oshawa.

Ward, who scored 27 goals in 38 games with the Spitfires, won a Minto Cup with the Whitby Warriors in 1997, the same year he was selected in the first round by the Montreal Canadiens.

Lacrosse was always one of those games I had a lot of passion for, Ward told the Brampton Guardina.

Ive always been a competitive guy and been in competitive sports. Now, I use my voice as the tool rather than my feet and my hands and Ive always preferred to be a hands-on kind of guy.

AM Best Affirms Ratings of Asian Reinsurance Corporation

December 27th, 2011

HONG KONG, Dec 23, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) –
A.M. Best Co. has affirmed the financial strength rating of B++
(Good) and the issuer credit rating of “bbb” of Asian Reinsurance
Corporation (Asian Re or the Corporation) (Thailand). The outlook
for both ratings is stable.

The ratings reflect Asian Re’s adequate risk-adjusted capitalization,
superior liquidity and the management efforts to reduce the
Corporation’s risk exposure by non-renewing its participation in
unprofitable accounts. The ratings also recognize the unique
organizational structure and the immunities and privileges granted by
country members to the Corporation.

Asian Re’s risk-adjusted capitalization, as demonstrated by Best’s
Capital Adequacy Ratio (BCAR), has remained adequate in 2010 and is
expected to remain almost stable for the current fiscal year ending in
December 2011. This is attributable to the capital infused during 2011
which greatly offset part of the currently known losses from Thai
flooding. However, if the losses from Thai flooding deteriorate
significantly, A.M. Best may revise its view on the financial strength
and the ratings of Asian Re.

Asian Re continues to have a conservative investment portfolio with 72%
of its assets constituted of cash and cash deposits in 2010. The adopted
prudent investment strategy provides a strong liquidity to the
Corporation.

The management decision to withdraw participation from unprofitable
accounts and fewer large catastrophe losses had contributed to the
turn-around of the underwriting income in 2010 after two consecutive
years of losses. However, Asian Re’s exposure to natural catastrophes
could erode the Corporation’s underwriting performance as in 2008 and
2009.

Offsetting factors include the uncertainty over the development of the
losses from Thai flooding, Asian Re’s relatively smaller capital base,
management of natural catastrophe exposure, high expense ratio as
compared to its competitors in Asia and claims reserving practice.

Asian Re’s expense ratio is at the high range compared to its peers in
Asia, primarily driven by the portfolio composition for which 94% is
constituted of proportional arrangements and the terms set out in the
reinsurance agreements with the ceding companies.

Asian Re relied on the reported claim amounts from its ceding companies
to set aside the outstanding reserves and added 5% of the outstanding
reserves as incurred but not reported (IBNR). Regarding Asian Re’s
reserving practice, A.M. Best is of the opinion that any adverse
development of the reported claims and any large catastrophe loss could
negatively impact Asian Re’s capitalization in the future.

The principal methodology used in determining these ratings is Best’s
Credit Rating Methodology — Global Life and Non-Life Insurance Edition,
which provides a comprehensive explanation of A.M. Best’s rating process
and highlights the different rating criteria employed. Additional key
criteria utilized include: “Understanding Universal BCAR”; “Catastrophe
Analysis in A.M. Best Ratings”; “Assessing Country Risk” and “Risk
Management and the Rating Process for Insurance Companies.”

Sports and strategic thinking

December 27th, 2011

Previously I wrote an article suggesting that PE at school should not stand for sports but should instead be focussed on physical activity for middle and mature aged health. However, sports should remain an important curriculum topic in education in my opinion and this article explains why.

The sporting arena is many things to many people. One hopes it is fun; it provides opportunities to demonstrate a competitive spirit; it can help develop a sense of fair play; or a sense of responsibility to ones team, and so on. As valid as these areas are, I feel that these are secondary to the idea of using the sports arena to teach children how to think strategically.

During a school PE session, I observed how during a team game, the ball fell unexpectedly into the hands of one our less abled players who happened to be right at the goal mouth.

A better player to her left side shouted To me!, and she obligingly passed the ball to him; he took the shot and missed, which was not a big surprise given the extreme angle that he was shooting from. Im sure most of you have seen or been part of similar situations. However, I would like to dissect this scene a bit more. I am confident, knowing the personalities of our two students, that the thought processes went something like this:

nWeaker athlete thinks: Crikey Ive got the ball and I know I should shoot at goal but wait theres a stronger player to my left asking for the ball? He should probably take the shot.

nStronger athlete thinks: Ooops, the ball has gone to the weaker player on my side even though shes standing right in front of the goal, its probably better if I take the shot ? Ill demand the ball and take the shot.

What I recognised out of this encounter was that the players were not thinking strategically, or rather they were, but in a very narrow way.

What they did not take into account, other than their playing skills, was their respective positions on the pitch (weaker player directly in front of the goal, stronger player at an acute angle to the side); or the timing of passing to the side instead of just taking the shot (by the time the weaker player has passed to the stronger player, the element of surprise has gone).

I started to remember the times when Ive seen this happen outside of the sporting arena.

A junior sales executive established a strong relationship with a potential client who was not expected to be a big spending client for some expensive scientific equipment.

However, it turned out unexpectedly over time that this potential client actually had a substantial budget. After this became apparent, the senior executives decided that the potential sale was too valuable to entrust with the junior executive who had initially built the relationship, and replaced her with a senior sales executive who took over the negotiations. However, within a few meetings the client left to a competitor along with the sales totalling millions of dollars. Apparently he did not trust a company that did not value the relationship already established with the junior sales executive.

To make the analogy clear then, the senior sales executive is in my mind the same as the stronger player put who is not ideally placed to seal the deal, or score the goal.

The junior sales executive it was true, did not have the sales experience of her more experienced colleague.

However, she was in front of the goal mouth and was therefore in the optimal position to score or in other words to conclude the deal. If there was strategic thinking by this company, it was very one dimensional and seemed to be based on seniority not taking time and place or value of relationship into account.

Imagine if we could figure out a way to train our people to think more strategically, particularly beyond a one dimensional focus.

Well of course there is a place to train people to think more strategically and beyond one dimension and that is on the sports field. Here are three areas that seem lend themselves particularly well in terms of strategic thinking skills in sporting environments which translate to off field events:

nCreating opportunities: the same mindset that goes into creating opportunities to score on the sports field can be used on any aspect of business or running of an organisation. As one example, people in marketing, advertising and branding understand this crucial mind set very well.

nPassing to where your team member will be, not where they are now: that is understanding that life, as in sports, does not stay still and one really needs to think ahead of time as to where business, people and opportunities will be, not where they are now.

nConstantly changing the breadth of focus of attention: a fast flowing running game of rugby requires a broad attention of focus, taking a penalty requires a narrow attention of focus.

This same adaptively changing breadth of focus is required in non-sporting fields whether it is surgery, accounting, policy drafting, advertising, legal work or land planning.

Undoubtably there are many more areas where strategic sports thinking overlaps with real life strategic thinking.

So how might such a focus for sports look in a learning environment? Heres one way that we are exploring this.

Weve chosen teams sports that require teamwork rather than individual skills and particularly when working with younger children, we chose sports that do not require extensive specialised motor skills that need to be learned before the team work can come to the forefront. So, to take an extreme example, sky-dive formation competitions require incredible teamwork, however the motor-skill set of learning to sky dive will predominate before any team skills can be identified, taught and honed.

Weve tended to use sports that require throwing or passing objects to team members: netball, touch rugby, or ultimate frisbee.

Rather than playing the full game, or international rules weve tended to play much simplified rules just to enhance the team work components.

Over time we can increase the complexity of the game to the full set of rules. We break our game relatively often just to gather around and talk specifically about strategy.

Eventually we will be very keen to have our children take part in competitive sports because this is the ultimate examination that our children could take that assesses their strategic thinking skills.

Finally, and this we believe is the critical and crucial step, we work with our children after the sports has finished, to identify and discuss situations that weve encountered on the sports field, which could be similar to other situations that they have or might encounter: their families, their immediate living or social communities such as school or youth groups that they might attend.

We discuss how strategic thinking might be effectively translated and used in these situations.

What is truly exciting, is to think what Fiji could be like if we had a whole generation of children that were trained to think strategically through sports.

They would enter their respective work places being able to create opportunities, change their breadth of focus quickly amp; appropriately, and recognise where the opportunities will be in the future, not where they are right now. I for one, am looking forward to this time.

Waste collection resumes in city, BJP strike partial

December 27th, 2011

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Six days after trash started piling in flats and houses, garbage collection resumed partially in the city on Monday. Kudumbashrees Clean Well workers collected garbage from flats, homes and apartments and buried it in 22 places identified by the city corporation. The workers, however, did not collect any plastic waste as the corporation had asked residents to segregate plastic and preserve it following the closure of Vilappilsala garbage treatment plant.

Kudumbashree workers buried the waste they collected from some areas in the very same premises that had empty space or free tract of land. The rest was collected and later transported to pre-designated plots in the city. As for the plastic waste, the corporation officials said that they will soon set up a plastic processing unit in the city.

The corporation has talked to a private firm regarding the processing of plastic waste. This time, the idea is to collect plastic en masse and hand it over to the firm so that they can process it for commercial purposes. The corporation has already asked the private company to submit a detailed proposal. Earlier the corporation was unsuccessful in its attempt to set up plastic shredding units at some market places. The registration for private agricultural agencies and enterprises interested in collecting organic waste generated in market places also began on Monday. The corporation has decided to remit a small amount from hotels and commercial establishments for collecting their waste. The crisis management cell that was opened to tackle the current situation received 28 calls on the first day. Health officer D Sreekumar said that all the complaints were promptly registered. It was mainly regarding the accumulated waste. As soon as we received the complaints, we deployed Kudumbashree workers to collect them.

In the following days, more employees will be deputed to address the issue, he said. The crisis management cell can be reached on 9496434517, 0471-2320821. Hartal peaceful The dawn-to-dusk hartal called by BJP in the city against what it termed the corporations inaction to tackle the garbage issue passed off peacefully on Monday. Shops and hotels remained closed and although BJP had assured that vehicular traffic would not be disrupted, autos and taxis stayed off the roads. KSRTC buses plied on roads with other private vehicles. BJP councillors M R Rajiv, M R Gopan, P Ashok Kumar, Sheeja Madhu, Rajendran Nair and Mohanan Nair along with party men took out a march from Martyrs square to corporation office with garbage kits. The councillors then rang up the corporation control room and asked what they should do with the garbage. Alleging that the control room did not respond to the call, BJP members staged a sit-in at the corporation office from 10.30 am to 12 noon and dispersed. The march was inaugurated by BJP state President V.Muraleedharan. He said that the corporation should immediately adopt scientific measures to process waste. Collecting waste and burying it in public grounds is illegal. This practice cannot be justified. Even in Vilappilsala, the waste water from the garbage treatment plant is allowed to flow into Karamana river which is a source for drinking water. It is time they put an end to all these dirty ways of waste processing, he said. BJP councillor Rajiv said that all current measures devised by the ruling corporation council cannot be fulfilled for want of funds. At present the corporation aims to install source level waste management units in all the hundred wards. The corporation aims to implement the scheme with Rs 80 lakh. However this sum is very insufficient.

There is no way biogas plants can be installed in all the hundred wards with this sum. The council should demand for more funds from the state government. The BJP councillors said that they would not allow garbage dumping in their own wards from Tuesday. It would create serious environmental problems in future. We would pressurize the ruling council to look for alternate measures.Six days after trash started piling in flats and houses, garbage collection resumed partially in the city on Monday. The cleanwell workers went around flats, homes and apartments collecting waste and buried it on 22 places identified by the city corporation. The workers however did not collect any plastic waste as the corporation had asked the residents to segregate plastic and preserve it following the shut down of Vilappilsala garbage treatment plant. In places where the Kudumbasree workers could find space on the premises of certain apartments, the waste was buried there. The rest of the garbage was collected and later transported to pre-designated plots in the city.

The corporation has had initial talks with a private firm regarding processing of plastic waste. Cyber Monday Deals in Video Games and Movies All Week at Amazon

December 27th, 2011

Today Amazon.com kicked off a week of Cyber Monday deals that will stretch all the way to Saturday, December 3.

Amazon used the same strategy with Black Friday last week. Rather than focusing solely on the one big shopping day, they released a variety of deals throughout the week around Black Friday.

Some of the best deals didnt appear until Black Friday, and I suspect the same will hold true for Cyber Monday. Id love to see the Sony Playstation 3 bundle with two games for $199 return as it was barely available on Black Friday before showing up as out of stock.

Some of last weeks big gaming deals are still hanging around. Xbox 360 Kinect with three games (Kinect Adventures!, Fruit Ninja and The Gunstringer) has been sitting in the top or second spot on Amazons best selling video game deals since it went live on Friday. Other popular deals have included Dance Central 2 for $29.99, Battlefield 3 for $39.99, Xbox 360 4GB Console with Kinect for $295, and two Skylanders figures for $10 total.

Over on the Blu-ray side, X-Men: First Class continues to be a hot seller, as does Inception, The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy Extended Editions, Harry Potter: The Complete 8 Film Collection and Jurassic Park Ultimate Trilogy. All of these titles are currently discounted, but the real deals are coming via Lightning Deals throughout each day. Well report on those separately as they are launched.

Prince Harry’s trip to Winter Wonderland

December 27th, 2011

Britains Prince Harry leaves after the marriage between Zara Phillips, the eldest granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth, and England rugby captain Mike Tindall at Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh, Scotland July 30, 2011.[Photo/Agencies]

Britains Prince Harry enjoyed a trip to Winter Wonderland last night (14.12.11).

The 27-year-old royal almost managed to go unnoticed at the festive attraction in Londons Hyde Park where he and friends visited the traditional Christmas markets but his distinctive red hair gave him away.

Fellow reveller Rachel Jones exclusively told BANG Showbiz: Harry looked like he was having a great time with his friends, chatting and larking about as they wandered through Winter Wonderland. They just looked like a normal group of guys, you wouldnt have known he was a prince! It was only when he took off his baseball cap to scratch his head and I could see his red hair that I knew for definite that it was him.

Although Harry was polite and friendly, his bodyguards were nearby at all times.

Rachel added: I tried to go over and have a photograph, but a security guard discreetly told me, No pictures. Still, it was nice to see that he was able to have a fairly normal evening out with his mates.

Another Winter Wonderland visitor Paul Bowles took to twitter to write: Smashed into prince harry on the dodgems last night. Top Guy just looked over and laughed. #princeharry #royalbanter (sic).

Following his festive fun, Harry and friends dined at Jaks restaurant in South Kensington and then partied at Zefi bar before leaving in the early hours of the morning.

Twitter user @HWalesWatch wrote: Prince Harry was at Jaks restaurant in Lon. tonight before drinks at Zefi while friend Nat. Pinkham partied down the street at BungaBunga (sic).

Photographer Jesal Parshotam wrote on his twitter account @therealjesal:#PrinceHarry brushed shoulders with a christmas tree as he left #zefi bar in kensignton Sw3 at 1.30am. He looked very festive (sic).

Espinal says goodbye to Hollywood

December 26th, 2011

Please sit back and enjoy the musical artistry of Vince Espinal as he gives us his rendition of a Billy Joel classic.

So many faces in and out of my life

Some will last

Some will just be now and then.

Life is a series of hellos and goodbyes

Im afraid its time for goodbye again.

Say goodbye to Hollywood

Say goodbye, my baby

Say goodbye to Hollywood

Say goodbye, my baby.

That was spot on, Vince. Good job.

Thank you, Vince said. Id like to dedicate that tune to my good friend Dennis.

If youve been paying attention, you know that Dennis Hollywood Cruz has been in first place almost every week since we got this party started — until Vince turned a two-game deficit into a two-game advantage.

Ive been in first place before, Vince said. Now I think Ive figured out how to stay here. All Ive got to do strategy-wise is let Dennis beat himself.

We now turn to the ex-leader of the Pacific Daily News Pigskin Prognosticators standings. What happened, Dennis?

Its like Vince said: I beat myself, Dennis said.

Explain yourself.

I tanked it; I lost on purpose; I went against my gut in order to lose, Dennis said.

Why would you do that?

I couldnt take it, Dennis said. I was in first place ever since ever since –

Hey, watch it, or some guys might Fokai you for infringement.

Sorry, Dennis said. As I was saying, I was in first place yet you guys didnt give me the respect.

We disrespected you?

Of course you did! Dennis said. You cast aspersions on my sexual preference; you intimated a woman could beat me at arm wrestling; and, worst of all, you said I was chubby!

Thats not disrespect: We made fun of you. Its apples and oranges, really.

No, its not, Dennis said. I cant help it if Im chubby: Im an endomorph.

A what?

An endomorph, Dennis said.

Is that like a Mighty Morphin Power Ranger?

No, its my body type, Dennis said, Although Power Rangers are cool.

Which one is your favorite; is it the Pink Power Ranger?
